QA & Test Automation

Testing is our core business – for more than 20 years, test automation included. We automate systems that are too complex to test by hand: substation automation with many devices in concert, train simulation via hardware-in-the-loop, device platforms with dozens of variants, end-to-end landscapes with hundreds of applications. From test concept through architecture and tool selection to a running test bench – and, where needed, as an outside view, mentor or interim QA lead.

Services

Test automation is not a tool but a system. We build it – and the process, the team and the numbers around it.

  • 01

    Test automation for complex systems

Substation automation: conformance and interoperability tests to IEC 61850 with many IEDs in concert, test schemas and automated test procedures. Rail: train simulation via hardware-in-the-loop for system tests of ETCS and driver displays (DMI) to EN 50126/50128/50159. Industry: fully automated testing and deployment of device platforms with 32 variants or 10 communication protocols. IT: end-to-end system tests across 240 applications, including iOS, Android and cloud apps.

Test automation architecture and tool selection

Before a framework is bought: architecture of the test automation across test levels, teams and target platforms – shift-left in the DevOps chain. Vendor-neutral evaluation of tools for test automation, test management, reporting, monitoring and observability with clear exclusion criteria, proofs of concept on the real system (web, iOS, Android, local and cloud apps), alignment with the product owners of the teams involved, training on the final stack.

HIL test benches and test frameworks

Building and extending hardware-in-the-loop test benches and test frameworks – with dSPACE and LabVIEW as well as with other platforms or our own set-ups. The platform follows the device under test and the budget, not the other way round: because we reproduce interfaces and protocols ourselves where needed (reverse engineering), we integrate any device – even without manufacturer documentation. Integrated into CI/CD (Jenkins, GitLab, Azure DevOps), results in Grafana, SonarQube or PowerBI. Scales from a single device to a platform.

    End-to-end and UI test automation

Automated tests through the whole chain – web, mobile, device user interfaces, engineering tools and back ends: Playwright, Robot Framework, Ranorex, Selenium, Cypress, Cucumber, Appium. Test design to ISTQB, BDD scenarios that business and development read together. Smoke tests that tell you within minutes whether a build is usable – for device platforms as well as sales portals and e-commerce platforms.

    Test concept and test strategy

Test concepts to ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119: test levels, test types, risk-based testing, shift-left, behaviour-driven development. Rolled out in the team with templates, training material and workshops – so the concept is lived, not filed. Sustainable test management that measurably raises the degree of automation.

Independent review – the outside view

A look from outside at test process, test concept, automation as well as test and acceptance specifications (FAT/SAT, supplier acceptance): test levels, test types, code coverage, defect lifecycle, traceability – assessed against ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119 and ISTQB, vendor-neutral. The result is not a report for the drawer but a prioritised list of measures with implementation horizons, aligned in stakeholder workshops. On request with solution options and a roadmap for test automation, SAST and CI/CD, plus an assessment of CRA readiness against IEC 62443-4-1. Because we come from testing, we also find concrete defects and architecture problems – not just process gaps.

    Mentoring, workshops and training

We build automation so that your team carries it afterwards: mentoring programmes for test engineers and developers, workshops on risk-based testing, BDD and test automation, training on the tool stack introduced, advice to development teams and stakeholders on quality assurance in agile development (Scrum, SAFe). From teaching: lecturer on the CAS Software Testing at OST Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, 2018 to 2026.

Interim test management and QA leadership

Overall responsibility for quality assurance on an interim basis – as test manager, QA lead or test director: technical leadership of the test team, planning, steering, reporting up to C-level, optimisation of the QA pipeline. Building a shared understanding of quality between development and product management – and a clean handover when the engagement ends.

Typical assignments

This is what the requests look like that customers bring to us.

  • 01

    "Our regression takes weeks."

We automate where risk and repetition are highest and put smoke and regression runs into the pipeline – risk-based, not blanket coverage.

  • 02

"We bought a tool, but nobody uses it."

Usually architecture, process and training are missing, not the tool. We add them – or re-evaluate neutrally, with exclusion criteria and a proof of concept.

  • 03

"The system cannot be tested in the lab."

Hardware-in-the-loop with reproduced interfaces and a simulated environment – from train simulation to device platforms.

  • 04

"The auditor asks for traceability and coverage."

Test concept to ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119, evidence and metrics that hold up in an audit – whether IEC 61508, CENELEC or ISO/IEC 17025.

  • 05

    "Our test manager has left."

Interim QA leadership from the first week, with reporting up to executive level and a handover plan from the start.

  • 06

    "We need a second opinion."

Independent review of test concept and process with a prioritised list of measures – and concrete findings, not just recommendations.
